Welcome
The Subtropical Cities 2008 conference as part of Riverfestival 2008
3 - 6 September 2008 | State Library of Queensland
From Fault-Lines to Sight-Lines Subtropical Urbanism in 20-20
Hosted by the Centre for Subtropical Design, a partnership between Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane City Council and Department of Infrastructure and Planning.
Welcome from Conference Chair
Designing for subtropical urbanism is complex. The subtropical world – its people and places – includes the diverse global, regional and developing cities between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
In 2006, the Centre for Subtropical Design held its inaugural conference as a forum for sharing experiences of subtropical living across these latitudes.
The concept of subtropicality as benign, easy living was challenged by the fault-lines of subtropical living in cities such as Sao Paulo and the emerging cities in Africa.
Since 2006, design approaches to subtropical cities have broadened while the issues of living sustainably have become more focused, particularly around the impact of climate change on cities, ecological footprints and sensitivity to local distinctiveness.
The 2008 Conference seeks to clear the opacity associated with the fault lines by providing clarity and vision for subtropical urbanism in 2020.
The Conference will offer an exhilarating setting to share and debate ideas; ideas about what subtropical urbanism could be by 2020. Will it aspire to a new resilient urban form? Will it still maintain a centrality of landscape? Will it still focus on ecological paradigms?
These and many other questions will be posed. We urge you to share your knowledge and ideas and look forward to meeting you on the Brisbane riverside in September 2008.
Yours sincerely
Professor Helen Armstrong Conference Chair
Message from the Director
Following the success of the inaugural conference in 2006, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us at Subtropical Cities 2008 which will again see leading international and national thinkers and designers converge on Brisbane to share world best practice on shaping the cities of the future, particularly those in warm climates like ours where the pressures of growth are already being felt and are likely to increase in coming decades as the effects of global warming are played out.
The Centre for Subtropical Design is particularly interested in the interaction/integration amongst climate, landscape and lifestyle (culture) as a starting point for achieving sustainable urban place-building that delivers great outcomes for people and supports long-term and resilient approaches to energy and water resources.
By joining us at the conference you can help us to achieve our vision of establishing Brisbane, South East Queensland as an internationally renowned centre for the design and realisation of liveable places in the subtropics.
Yours Sincerely
Rosemary Kennedy Director Centre for Subtropical Design
