Environmental Sustainability
Subtropical Cities 2008... is a environmentally sustainable conference
By minimising waste which goes to landfill, choosing a venue which is easily accessible, water and energy efficient, and offsetting emissions, such as speaker’s air travel, which cannot be avoided, this conference is environmentally friendly.
This is what we’ve done already…
- Secured conference facilities within State Library, that is not only within 400m walking distance from CBD accommodation venues, but boasts significant natural lighting, and other energy efficient features.
For more info on local public transport, please click here.
- Provided this on-line Call for Abstracts and Registration service to minimise paper waste.
Reviewed our 2006 activities to focus on further reductions and avoidance of water waste and energy consumption.
- Suggested low emission activities for pre and post conference tours.
- Recognised the environmental achievements of our sponsors.
- Chosen to offset the of greenhouse gas emissions from speakers air travel (approx. 1 tonne for every 3,700km of air travel) by purchasing additional green power for the conference venue for the equivalent amount of emissions that would have otherwise been generated from its use of coal-fired electricity.
Here is what you can do while at conference...
- Book early with one of our suggested accommodation sources that are located within easy walking distance of the conference venue.
- Enjoy our catering that will focus on food sourced locally and reusable crockery and utensils.
- Offset your own air travel with a Greenhouse Friendly approved abatement project that seeks to contribute to avoiding or reducing emissions within the shortest timeframe. Click here for more details.
- Join in a Neighbourhood Shadeways tree planting activity on Saturday Sept 6th. These are local street tree planting projects which target shade-hungry pathways in Brisbane neighbourhoods to encourage walking, cycling and cooling of our urban heat islands.
